About this course

Theology and religious studies is a discipline that takes religion seriously as an intellectual subject, examining sacred texts, theological traditions, philosophical arguments about belief, and the ways in which religion intersects with politics, history, literature, art and culture. It is not simply a confessional exercise in understanding one tradition from within, but a critical and comparative enquiry into religious phenomena across traditions and time periods. Computing science, by contrast, is concerned with the principles of computation, algorithm design, data structures and software systems.

The combination may seem unusual, but it reflects a genuine convergence in the contemporary world, where questions about ethics, meaning, identity and human dignity are increasingly played out in digital environments.

At the University of Glasgow this programme is studied part-time, and it includes a year abroad, making it one of the more flexible and internationally oriented routes through these disciplines. Glasgow's theology and religious studies department has particular strength in biblical studies, church history and the intersection of religion with wider cultural and intellectual life, while its computing science provision is grounded in rigorous technical and theoretical training. You will develop both critical engagement with religious thought and practical programming and analytical skills, with the year abroad adding international depth to your studies.

The combination opens career paths that are highly relevant to the contemporary world. Technology companies, health organisations, educational institutions and public bodies all require professionals who can think carefully about the ethical dimensions of digital systems, the representation of diverse communities in data and algorithm design, and the intersection of human values with technological change. Teaching, chaplaincy, heritage, community engagement, software development and data analysis are all roles available to graduates.

Postgraduate study in either discipline, or in areas such as digital humanities, ethics and technology, or information studies, is also a well-supported option.
