Theology, religion, and philosophy of religion is a field of study that takes seriously some of the most profound questions human beings have ever asked: Does God exist? What is the nature of the sacred? How should we live?

What can we know about ultimate reality? It brings together the rigorous textual and historical scholarship of theology and religious studies with the analytical philosophical tradition, developing students who can engage both critically and sympathetically with the great religious traditions and with the philosophical arguments that have grown up around them.

At the University of Cambridge this three-year full-time programme offers a distinctive approach to these questions, combining the depth of Cambridge's scholarly tradition in theology and religious studies with genuine philosophical rigour. You will engage with the major religious traditions of the world, including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and others, studying their texts, histories, doctrines, and practices alongside the philosophical arguments about religion, knowledge, ethics, and metaphysics that arise from and apply to them. The Cambridge environment, with its extraordinary library resources, distinguished faculty, and intellectual vitality, provides an exceptional context for this kind of study.

Graduates from theology, religion, and philosophy of religion go on to careers in the church and other religious organisations, education, the civil service, journalism, publishing, international development and humanitarian work, law, and a wide range of other roles where the ability to think carefully about values, meaning, and culture is valued.
