Theology and Religion

Theology and religion is a field that takes seriously both the internal coherence of religious traditions and the comparative and historical perspectives that illuminate them from the outside. It encompasses the study of Christian faith, doctrine, and practice across the centuries and across cultures, alongside the investigation of the major and local religious traditions of the world, from Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism to indigenous and new religious movements. The discipline draws on history, philosophy, textual analysis, anthropology, and sociology to examine the origins, functions, and meanings of religion as a human phenomenon.

At the University of Aberdeen this four-year programme reflects the institution's long tradition of theological education alongside its commitment to the comparative and global study of religion. You will engage with Christian thought in its historical, cross-cultural, and contemporary dimensions as well as with the breadth of world religious traditions, developing the capacity to read primary texts carefully, to construct analytical arguments, and to understand how religious communities and ideas have shaped and been shaped by their social and political environments. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study religion and theology in another country and to bring an international perspective to your work.

Graduates from theology and religion programmes pursue a wide range of careers. Teaching at secondary level is a common path for those with RE as a subject specialism. Others work in chaplaincy, pastoral care, social work, interfaith relations, journalism, publishing, and the charity sector.

The analytical, ethical, and communication skills developed through the degree are valued across public service, law, politics, healthcare, and education. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in theology, religious studies, ethics, or philosophy, with a view to academic careers or specialist professional roles.
