Teaching English as a Foreign Language

At Essex this three-year full-time programme begins in your first year with two practical TEFL modules where you study teaching methodology, receive guided preparation, and engage in teaching practice. Together these modules provide the content required for a TEFL-initiate qualification, and on successful completion you are awarded a stand-alone certificate in TEFL, giving you a credential that enables you to begin teaching while continuing your degree. This early, practical focus is distinctive and means that by the time you graduate you will already have meaningful teaching experience and a professional qualification that employers in the international EFL sector recognise.

The degree as a whole develops your understanding of language as a system, how it is learned and taught, and how teachers can adapt their practice to different learner needs, levels, and cultural contexts. Research skills, critical reflection on teaching, and the ability to engage with applied linguistics literature are developed throughout.

Graduates move into careers as English language teachers in schools, language institutes, and universities worldwide, as well as in materials development, teacher training, curriculum design, language testing, and applied linguistics research. Many pursue further qualifications such as the Cambridge CELTA, Delta, or PGCE, or continue to postgraduate study in applied linguistics, TEFL, or education.
