Sustainable food production with a focus on fresh produce addresses one of the most pressing challenges facing agriculture and food systems worldwide. Growing fresh fruit, vegetables, salads, and herbs for human consumption requires an understanding of plant biology, soil science, agronomy, and the environmental conditions that determine crop health and yield. At Anglia Ruskin University you will study this three-year full-time degree, with a typical entry tariff of 120 points. You will examine the biological and ecological principles that underpin crop production, including plant physiology, pest and disease management, and the interactions between crops and their growing environments. You will study protected cropping systems such as glasshouses and polytunnels alongside field production, exploring how different methods affect both output and environmental impact.

Supply chain management, food safety, and the commercial realities of the fresh produce market are covered alongside the agronomy, giving you an understanding of the industry from field to shelf. Practical work is central to the programme, connecting classroom learning to real production environments.

Graduates from this programme work in commercial horticulture and fresh produce growing, in agronomy and crop consultancy, in sustainability and environmental management roles within food businesses, and in farm management. The supermarket supply chain, organic certification bodies, environmental charities, and government advisory services all employ people with this specialist knowledge. Further study in agricultural science, food systems, environmental management, or plant science is a natural progression for those who want to pursue research or specialist advisory careers.
