About this course

Sustainable fashion is one of the most urgent fields to have emerged from the convergence of design, business, environmental science, and ethics. The global fashion industry is among the most resource-intensive and polluting in the world, and the movement towards more sustainable practice asks fundamental questions about how clothing is designed, produced, consumed, and disposed of. A sustainable fashion degree engages with these questions seriously, combining creative and technical design skills with an understanding of supply chains, circular economy principles, material science, consumer behaviour, and the regulatory and cultural contexts that shape what change is actually possible.

At the University of Chichester, you will study sustainable fashion over three years of full-time study. You will develop practical skills in garment design and construction alongside a deep engagement with the sustainability challenges facing the industry at every stage of a product's life. This includes understanding the environmental impact of different fibres and production processes, the ethics of global manufacturing supply chains, slow fashion and circular design principles, and the ways in which brands and consumers are beginning to shift behaviour in response to growing awareness of environmental and social harm.

You will also engage with business strategy, marketing, and the commercial realities that any sustainable fashion enterprise must navigate. Critical thinking and research skills are central to the programme, and you will be encouraged to test ideas and experiment with materials and methods throughout.

Graduates from sustainable fashion programmes are entering a field that is rapidly growing in commercial and policy significance. Career paths lead into fashion design and product development roles with brands committed to sustainable practice, as well as into sustainability consulting, supply chain management, material innovation, and circular economy strategy. Roles in retail buying, fashion journalism, and brand communications with a sustainability focus are further options.

Non-governmental organisations, industry bodies, and policy organisations working on fashion and environmental regulation also draw on graduates with this combination of creative and analytical skills. Postgraduate study in fashion design, sustainability, or business is an option for those who want to specialise further.
