Sustainable Development

Sustainable development is the study of how human societies can meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs, to use the discipline's founding formulation. It is an inherently interdisciplinary field, drawing on environmental science, economics, sociology, political science, geography, and ethics to understand the interconnected challenges of climate change, resource depletion, biodiversity loss, poverty, and inequality. In a world where these challenges are increasingly urgent, the ability to analyse sustainability problems and contribute to practical solutions is genuinely valuable.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this programme is offered part-time, giving students the flexibility to study alongside other commitments. UHI has a distinctive character as a university rooted in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, regions that are themselves significant sites for sustainable development questions: renewable energy, land management, coastal erosion, rural community resilience, and the transition away from fossil fuel extraction are all live issues in the contexts the university serves. This setting gives the programme a particularity that connects abstract sustainability concepts to concrete place-based challenges.

Graduates of sustainable development programmes work in environmental consultancy, NGOs, local and national government, sustainability roles in businesses, international development organisations, planning, renewable energy, land management, and research. The breadth of the discipline means graduates can contribute across a wide range of sectors, and the urgency of sustainability challenges means demand for professionals with relevant knowledge is growing across the economy. Further study in environmental policy, sustainable development, climate science, or related fields is open to graduates who wish to specialise or pursue research.
