About this course

Sustainable development is the study of how human societies can meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. It draws on economics, ecology, geography, policy studies, and social science to examine the interconnections between environmental systems and human activity, asking hard questions about how growth, equity, and ecological limits can be reconciled. It is a discipline that has become more urgent as the evidence for climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion has accumulated, and one that equips you to engage seriously with some of the defining challenges of the coming decades.

The University of East Anglia has deep institutional roots in environmental research, and its three-year full-time Sustainable Development programme draws on that tradition. You will explore the scientific foundations of environmental change alongside the political, economic, and social frameworks through which responses are designed and implemented. Topics span climate policy, international development, energy transitions, land use, water governance, and the relationship between local communities and global systems.

You will develop skills in quantitative and qualitative research methods, policy analysis, and evidence-based argument, learning to work with data as well as to communicate findings clearly to different audiences. The programme trains you to think across disciplinary boundaries, recognising that sustainable development problems rarely fall neatly within a single academic field.

You will study at a campus with strong connections to environmental research institutes and policy organisations, and the intellectual environment reflects decades of work on climate science, environmental economics, and international environmental governance.

Graduates pursue careers in environmental consultancy, international development organisations, government agencies, NGOs, sustainability roles within the private sector, and policy advisory work. The combination of analytical rigour and policy awareness also opens paths into journalism, research, and postgraduate study in environmental science, development studies, or public policy.
