About this course

Sustainable design engineering brings together the technical capabilities of engineering with a principled commitment to environmental and social responsibility. Where conventional engineering education might treat sustainability as an additional consideration, this discipline places it at the core, asking from the outset how products, systems, and built environments can be designed to minimise resource use, reduce harm, and serve human needs over the long term. As the pressure to decarbonise economies and redesign industrial systems intensifies, engineers with this combination of skills are in growing demand.

At the University of Sunderland, this four-year full-time degree includes an integrated foundation year, providing a carefully supported entry into degree-level engineering study. The foundation year is designed for students who are returning to education, who did not follow a conventional A-level route, or who need additional preparation before tackling the full engineering curriculum, and it offers a structured and genuinely useful pathway into the degree. Once on the main programme you will study engineering principles including mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, and design, applying these through projects that have sustainability and responsible practice at their heart.
