About this course

Automotive engineering is undergoing one of the most profound transformations in its history. The transition away from internal combustion engines towards electric powertrains, the growing importance of hybrid systems and fuel cells, tightening emissions regulation, and the integration of autonomous driving technology are all reshaping what automotive engineers need to know and do. Sustainable automotive engineering prepares you for this new reality, placing environmental responsibility at the centre of the engineering curriculum.

At Sussex you will study the core principles of automotive engineering, including vehicle dynamics, structures, powertrains, materials, and design, alongside the sustainability dimension that defines the field's future. You will examine electric and hybrid vehicle technology, energy storage, lightweight materials, lifecycle analysis, and the systems engineering approaches that integrate these elements into vehicles that perform well while minimising environmental impact. The four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for those who need it, a sandwich placement year in industry, and a year abroad, giving you substantial professional experience and an international perspective on automotive engineering practice.

Work placement experience in particular is invaluable in an industry that values engineers with real exposure to production environments and product development processes.

Graduates are in demand in automotive manufacturing, component supply, motorsport, electric vehicle start-ups, energy systems, transport consultancy, and government and regulatory bodies concerned with vehicle standards and emissions. The combination of core engineering competence and sustainability focus is increasingly what employers across the sector are seeking. Professional engineering registration is a natural goal, and the programme provides the academic foundation to pursue it.

Postgraduate study in automotive engineering, sustainable transport, or energy systems is also an option.
