Statistics, Economics and a Language
Statistics, economics and a language is one of the most genuinely interdisciplinary combinations in the UCL undergraduate offer, bringing together three distinct but complementary bodies of knowledge and skill. Statistics is the science of reasoning from data under uncertainty, providing the mathematical tools to extract meaning from information and to quantify what we know and do not know. Economics provides the theoretical and empirical framework for understanding how markets, agents and institutions make decisions.
A language opens access to a different cultural and intellectual tradition while developing the communication and analytical skills that language learning requires.
This three-year full-time programme at UCL develops all three components to a high level. You will cover probability theory, statistical inference, regression analysis and multivariate methods alongside microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and economic theory, and you will develop language skills through intensive study of your chosen language. The combination develops a genuinely unusual set of capabilities: the rigour to work with data, the theoretical framework to understand economic systems and the linguistic and cultural competence to engage across borders.

Graduates from this combination are exceptionally well placed in the graduate market. Financial services, economic consultancy, international organisations, data science, government economic and statistical services, the technology sector and academia all offer excellent career pathways. The combination of quantitative skills, economic understanding and language competence is particularly valuable in internationally oriented roles, and the language dimension significantly broadens the range of organisations and countries in which graduates can work.
Postgraduate study in statistics, economics, data science or a language-related field is also a natural pathway.
