Sports Therapy with Foundation Year
Sports Therapy is a specialist healthcare discipline concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions in physically active populations. Sports therapists work with athletes and recreational exercisers at all levels, providing pitch-side first aid and injury assessment, designing and delivering rehabilitation programmes, using manual therapy and soft tissue techniques, and advising on training practices that reduce injury risk. At Birmingham City University, this four-year full-time programme with a foundation year prepares you for practice as a Sports Therapist. The foundation year provides additional scientific preparation for students who need it before engaging with the main degree curriculum. You will study musculoskeletal anatomy, exercise physiology, biomechanics, soft tissue therapy, rehabilitation science, sports nutrition, and the assessment and management of acute and chronic sports injuries.
Clinical placements are a central feature of the programme, giving you hands-on experience working with athletes and active individuals in relevant sporting and clinical settings.

Graduates of Sports Therapy programmes work as sports therapists with professional and amateur sports clubs, in private practice, in fitness and rehabilitation centres, and in sports medicine clinics. Many pursue additional professional qualifications in physiotherapy, osteopathy, or sports medicine, and some progress into specialist roles in rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, or sports science support.
