Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation

Sports therapy and rehabilitation is a discipline concerned with the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions encountered in sport and physical activity. Sports therapists work with athletes and active individuals at all levels, from recreational participants to elite competitors, providing immediate care for injuries as well as designing and delivering rehabilitation programmes that return people to full function. The role requires a thorough understanding of the human body, an evidence-based approach to treatment, and the practical skills to apply soft tissue techniques, design exercise progressions, and make appropriate clinical decisions.

At the University of Kent, this three-year full-time programme covers the full scope of sports therapy practice. You will study anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics in depth, developing the biological and functional understanding that underpins good clinical practice. You will learn to assess injuries, identify their mechanisms, and select appropriate treatment approaches, including soft tissue therapy, taping and strapping, exercise prescription, and modality-based interventions.

Rehabilitation planning is central to the curriculum, and you will develop the ability to design progressive return-to-sport programmes that are grounded in current evidence. Clinical skills are developed through practical sessions and work with real clients, building the hands-on competence that the profession demands.

You will also study clinical and professional practice issues, including first aid, scope of practice, and the ethical dimensions of working as a sports therapist, ensuring you are well-prepared for the realities of professional life.

Graduates of sports therapy and rehabilitation go on to work with professional and amateur sports clubs, private therapy clinics, gyms and leisure facilities, and increasingly within NHS rehabilitation and musculoskeletal services. Many pursue registration with the Society of Sports Therapists. Further study in physiotherapy, sports and exercise medicine, or strength and conditioning is a common route for those who wish to extend their clinical range.
