Sports Journalism

Sports journalism sits at the intersection of journalism practice and the vast and passionate world of sport, requiring both the core skills of the journalist, including accuracy, speed, research, writing and interviewing, and a deep knowledge of sport in its many forms and the commercial, social and political contexts in which it operates. Sport is one of the largest categories of media coverage in the world, from daily newspaper sports pages and broadcast commentary to digital video, podcasts, social media content and long-form investigative reporting. Sports journalists must be capable across all of these formats.

At the University of Gloucestershire this three-year, full-time programme develops your journalistic skills alongside your understanding of sport as an industry and a cultural phenomenon. You will develop skills in written journalism, broadcast presenting and production, video journalism, social media content creation and matchday reporting, all applied to the sports world. The programme provides exceptional practical opportunities, including access to Premier League, Women's Super League and EFL clubs such as Wolves, Bristol City and Cheltenham Town, as well as rugby and county cricket teams, giving you real-world experience in social media, videography and matchday reporting with professional organisations.

The combination of journalistic rigour and sports knowledge the degree develops is distinctive.

Graduates pursue careers as sports journalists, sports broadcasters, sports reporters, podcasters, social media managers for sports organisations, video content producers, sports editors, press officers for clubs and governing bodies, and sports marketing and communications professionals. The sports media industry spans print, broadcast, digital and social media, and the most versatile graduates are those who can work across all these formats. Many graduates also move into roles in sports management, PR and communications.

Postgraduate study in journalism, broadcast media or sports management is a further option.
