Sports Coaching

Sports coaching is the applied science of helping athletes and participants improve their performance, wellbeing and relationship with physical activity. It draws on exercise physiology, biomechanics, psychology, pedagogy and sports science to understand how the body responds to training and how coaches can design and deliver sessions that genuinely develop the people they work with. Good coaching is as much about communication, motivation and ethical practice as it is about technical knowledge, and degree-level study in this field addresses all of these dimensions.

This two-year full-time programme at the University of Sunderland has been developed in consultation with industry and governing bodies, ensuring that its content reflects current professional practice. You will explore how the body moves, performs and adapts to physical demands, combining scientific theory with hands-on learning in state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. You will examine coaching methodology, the principles of skill acquisition, athlete development across the lifespan, and the psychological factors that influence performance and participation.

The programme prepares you not just to understand sport scientifically but to translate that understanding into effective practice in real coaching environments.

Further study options include postgraduate programmes in sports coaching, sports science, strength and conditioning, or sports psychology for those who wish to deepen their expertise or pursue research.
