Sports Coaching and Development

Sports coaching and development is an applied discipline that sits at the intersection of sports science, pedagogy, and organisational management. Coaching is not simply about technical instruction in a sport: it encompasses an understanding of how athletes learn and develop, how motivation and psychological wellbeing affect performance, how coaches can design effective training environments, and how sports development programmes can be structured to promote participation and talent at community and elite levels. The development dimension of the programme adds a broader perspective, asking how sport can be used to achieve social goals and how sporting pathways from grassroots to elite performance are built and managed.

At the University of the West of Scotland, this four-year programme includes a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to study and observe coaching and sports development in a different cultural context. This is particularly valuable in a field where different countries have very different approaches to developing sporting talent, organising grassroots participation, and building coaching cultures. Throughout the programme, you will study sports physiology, psychology, biomechanics, sports development policy, coaching methodology, and the management of sports organisations.

Practical coaching work is embedded in the programme, giving you the opportunity to develop and apply coaching skills in real sporting contexts.

Graduates work as coaches and strength and conditioning specialists across a range of sports, as development officers in governing bodies and local authorities, in community sport roles, and in sports management within clubs and national organisations. Postgraduate study in coaching science, sports development, or physical education is a further option for those who wish to specialise.
