Sports Coaching and Development
Sports coaching and development is a degree that examines both the science and the practice of coaching, preparing you to work effectively with athletes and participants across a range of sports and at different levels of performance and development. Coaching is more than the transmission of technical skills: it involves understanding human motivation, applying learning theory, designing effective training and practice environments, supporting athlete wellbeing, and developing the interpersonal capabilities that allow coaches to build trust and bring out the best in the people they work with. Sports development adds the broader perspective of how sport is promoted, structured, and made accessible across communities and populations.
At the University of Bedfordshire, this part-time programme scored 100% student satisfaction across eleven questions in the National Student Survey 2025, including for teaching staff explaining things, fair marking of assessments, and the development of knowledge and skills for the future, reflecting a genuine commitment to teaching quality. You will study coaching theory and methodology, sports psychology, sports physiology, athlete development, programme design, inclusion and diversity in sport, and the management and organisation of sport at community and elite levels. The part-time mode allows you to balance study with coaching practice, work, or other commitments, integrating your academic learning with your ongoing practical experience in sport.
Graduates pursue careers as sports coaches at community, youth, performance, and elite levels, in sports development roles within national governing bodies, local authority sport and leisure, the education sector, and community sport organisations. Some move into talent identification, strength and conditioning, physical education teaching with additional qualification, sports management, and performance analysis. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in sports coaching science, sports psychology, or elite performance.
