Sport Performance Analysis
Sport performance analysis is a professional discipline that applies data collection, video review, and statistical methods to the systematic understanding and improvement of athletic performance. It has become a standard feature of professional sport at every level, from elite club academies to international representative teams, and its role continues to expand as technology makes data collection faster and more comprehensive. Performance analysts help coaches and athletes understand what is happening in matches and training sessions, identify tactical patterns, track physical outputs, and support the evidence-based decision-making that modern high-performance sport demands.
At the University of Suffolk this three-year full-time programme prepares you for the full scope of the contemporary performance analyst role, from the fundamental principles of performance analysis through to the most advanced research-informed practice used in professional sport. You will develop skills in video analysis software, data collection and management, statistical interpretation, and the communication of findings to coaches and other practitioners. You will study the theoretical and methodological frameworks that underpin evidence-based performance analysis and engage with the research literature that informs practice.
The programme develops both the technical capabilities and the professional understanding needed to work effectively in the sports science and performance environment.
Graduates work as performance analysts in professional sports clubs, national governing bodies, elite academies, and sports science support services. The field has grown substantially and now encompasses a wide range of sports beyond football, including rugby, cricket, basketball, and many Olympic and Paralympic sports. The data collection and analytical skills developed on the degree also transfer into sports technology, sports data, and research roles within sport and adjacent industries.
Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in sport science, data science, or a specialist sport performance area.
