About this course

Sport, exercise, and nutrition is a discipline that examines the science underlying physical performance and health from multiple angles, bringing together exercise physiology, sports science, and nutritional science to understand how the body functions, adapts, and can be supported through food and physical activity. The three areas are deeply interconnected: what you eat affects how you perform and recover; how you train shapes your metabolic and physiological profile; and the interactions between diet, exercise, and health are central to addressing major public health challenges including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

At Northumbria University in Newcastle, this four-year full-time extended degree includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside the core academic content. The extended format provides additional time to develop your knowledge and skills to a high level before moving into professional life. You will study exercise physiology, nutritional science, sports performance analysis, health promotion, and the applied practice of using nutritional knowledge to optimise performance or support health in both elite sport and recreational contexts.

The programme develops both the scientific understanding and the applied skills needed to work effectively across the range of contexts in which sport, exercise, and nutrition professionals operate.

You will develop skills in scientific research, physiological testing, nutritional analysis, data interpretation, and the communication of evidence-based advice to individuals and groups.

Graduates from sport, exercise, and nutrition programmes pursue careers in sports performance support, personal training, health promotion, dietetics and nutrition practice, public health, sports coaching, research, and the fitness industry. The combination of exercise science and nutrition knowledge is also relevant in clinical and healthcare settings. Postgraduate study in nutrition, exercise physiology, or sports science is a natural next step for those seeking specialist roles.
