About this course

Sport Engineering is an applied discipline that brings the principles of engineering to bear on the design, analysis, and improvement of sporting equipment, environments, and performance. It asks how materials science, biomechanics, fluid dynamics, and manufacturing processes can be combined to make sport safer, fairer, and more effective for participants at every level. From the aerodynamics of cycling helmets and the construction of running shoes to the design of playing surfaces and the instrumentation of athlete monitoring systems, sport engineering sits at the intersection of technical precision and human performance.

At Nottingham Trent University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, giving you a thorough grounding in the scientific and engineering principles you will need before moving into degree-level study. The foundation year is designed to build confidence in mathematics, physics, and engineering fundamentals, ensuring you are fully prepared for the technical demands of the programme. As the course progresses you will study core engineering subjects alongside sports science, developing an understanding of how the human body moves and performs and how products and systems can be designed to support and enhance that movement.
