About this course

Sport coaching is the practice of guiding individuals and teams to develop their physical capabilities, technical skills, tactical understanding, and psychological resilience in sport. A skilled coach does much more than instruct: they create learning environments, build relationships, analyse performance, design training programmes, and manage the complex dynamics of athlete motivation and group cohesion. As sport at all levels has become more evidence-informed and as the value of coaching for wellbeing as well as performance has become clearer, the demand for formally qualified coaches with both theoretical grounding and practical skills has grown considerably.

At Birmingham Newman University, this four-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year, which provides the academic and scientific preparation you need before entering the main degree. The foundation year is designed to ensure that students from a variety of educational backgrounds can build the knowledge base in sports science, physiology, and research methods needed to succeed in degree-level study. From the first year of the BA itself, you will study the science and practice of coaching in depth, examining the physical, psychological, and social dimensions of athletic development, and developing your own coaching skills through practical work with athletes in a range of sports and contexts.

The curriculum covers exercise physiology, sports psychology, pedagogy of sport, talent identification and development, performance analysis, coaching ethics, and safeguarding, all of which are essential to professional coaching practice. Practical placement in coaching environments runs alongside the academic content throughout the programme.

Graduates work as coaches in community sport, school sport, professional and semi-professional clubs, national governing body programmes, and leisure and fitness settings. Others move into sports development, physical education, or strength and conditioning. Postgraduate study in sport science, physical education, or sports management is an option for those seeking advanced expertise.

Genuinely worthwhile
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” the city is…

Would do it again
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city wit…
