About this course

Sport business management combines an understanding of the sport industry's commercial operations with the management skills needed to run them effectively. Sport is a major economic sector encompassing professional clubs, governing bodies, broadcasters, sponsors, equipment manufacturers, events companies, digital platforms and leisure facilities, and it requires managers who understand both its commercial logic and its distinctive cultural and social dimensions. This degree prepares graduates for careers across that broad industry.

At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year programme has strong industry connections with organisations including Leeds City Council, Digital Sport North, Leeds Rhinos and the Rugby Football League, as the university notes, and these relationships have directly led to full-time employment for former placement students. You will study sport marketing, event management, sponsorship and commercial partnerships, finance for sport organisations, digital sport, human resource management and strategic management, developing both the business knowledge and the sport-specific understanding that industry roles require. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work placements, providing structured opportunities to develop professional experience and international perspective alongside your academic study.

The sport industry is highly competitive at the entry level, and the combination of academic knowledge, industry connections and direct work experience that Leeds Beckett provides is a significant advantage when entering the graduate market. The international dimension of the degree also reflects the genuinely global nature of major sport brands and events.

Graduates go on to careers in professional sport clubs, national governing bodies, sport marketing agencies, event management companies, sport media, fitness and leisure businesses and public sector sport development. Further study in sport management, sport business or MBA programmes is also a common route for those seeking senior leadership roles in the industry.
