Sport and Exercise Therapy
Sport and exercise therapy is a clinical discipline concerned with the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries, particularly those that arise in sporting and physically active populations. Sport therapists work alongside physiotherapists, sports medicine doctors, and other healthcare professionals to support athletes and active individuals through injury and back to full participation. They assess injury, devise treatment plans, deliver manual therapy and exercise-based rehabilitation, and develop conditioning programmes to reduce the risk of future problems.
At the University of Lincoln, this three-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and situates sport therapy within the broader context of musculoskeletal healthcare and sports medicine. You will study anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, injury assessment and management, exercise rehabilitation, sports massage and manual therapy, and the psychological aspects of injury and recovery. The programme recognises that sport therapists work in genuinely multidisciplinary environments, and it prepares you for the collaborative professional relationships that are central to effective practice in sport medicine and rehabilitation settings.

Graduates pursue careers as sport therapists in professional and semi-professional sport clubs, with national teams, in private clinical practice, in fitness and rehabilitation settings, and in occupational health roles. Membership of professional bodies such as the Society of Sports Therapists (SST) provides a route to professional recognition. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in physiotherapy, sport medicine, or musculoskeletal healthcare, and the clinical foundation of the degree is a strong basis for those training routes.
