Sport and Exercise Science with professional placement or study abroad
Sport and exercise science applies the methods of biology, physiology, psychology, and biomechanics to the understanding of human physical performance and health. It is a discipline that matters both for elite sport, where marginal gains in performance can be decisive, and for public health, where understanding how to promote and sustain physical activity has implications for millions of people. At the University of Bath, which has one of the strongest sport science environments in the UK, this four-year programme places you at the heart of both applied research and high-performance practice.
You will study core strands in physiology, psychology, and biomechanics, developing your understanding of how the body responds to training and competition, how mental factors influence performance and exercise behaviour, and how movement can be analysed and improved. You will apply this knowledge to both sports performance and exercise participation, building an understanding of how sport and exercise science connects to real practice in coaching, rehabilitation, and health promotion. The programme includes a professional placement or study abroad in year three, giving you either extended experience in a professional sport or exercise setting or the opportunity to study at a partner institution in another country.
Work placement activity supports your professional development throughout.
Graduates of sport and exercise science programmes go into a wide range of careers in sport, health, and fitness. Roles in performance analysis, strength and conditioning, sport psychology, physiotherapy (with further study), exercise physiology, public health, and sports coaching are all common destinations. The research and data analysis skills the programme develops also suit roles in health research, sports technology, and policy.
Many graduates proceed to postgraduate study in sport science, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, or public health. Bath's reputation and its exceptional facilities give graduates a strong starting point for competitive careers in sport and health.
