About this course

Sport and exercise science is the systematic study of how the human body responds and adapts to physical activity, exercise, and sport. It is a discipline that combines physiology, psychology, biomechanics, and nutrition to understand athletic performance and to promote health and wellbeing across the population. The field ranges from the elite end of sport, where marginal gains are pursued through data-driven training and recovery protocols, to public health applications, where exercise is increasingly recognised as medicine.

At the University of Suffolk you will study across three years on a full-time programme. The curriculum covers exercise physiology, including how the cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems respond to training and fatigue, alongside sports biomechanics, which examines how movement is produced and how it can be optimised or made safer. Sports and exercise psychology addresses the mental skills and processes that shape performance, motivation, and wellbeing.

Nutrition science explores how diet affects physical capacity and recovery. You will develop practical skills in laboratory testing and data collection alongside the quantitative and research methods needed to design, conduct, and interpret studies in the field. The combination of scientific rigour and applied relevance means you will engage with real-world questions about how people exercise, train, and maintain their physical health.

Graduates of sport and exercise science enter careers across sport, health, and fitness. Roles as strength and conditioning coaches, sport scientists working with professional teams, personal trainers, and exercise physiologists in health and clinical settings are all common directions. Public health, health promotion, and community sport development draw on the exercise science knowledge from a population perspective.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study, including specialist programmes in sport science, physiotherapy, physical education, or sports medicine, and some pursue registration pathways with relevant professional bodies to expand the scope of their clinical or health professional practice.
