About this course

Sport and exercise science applies the principles of biology, physiology, psychology, biomechanics and nutrition to the study of physical activity, performance and health. It is a discipline concerned both with how the human body responds to exercise and sport and with how that knowledge can be applied to improve athletic performance, support rehabilitation, promote public health and understand the factors that influence physical activity across different populations. The field has grown considerably in recent decades as awareness of the health benefits of exercise has increased and as sport at the elite level has become ever more evidence-driven.

At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year full-time programme aims to develop your scientific and critical understanding of issues relevant to sport and exercise, covering both performance and health dimensions. You will study human physiology, exercise physiology, sports biomechanics, sport and exercise psychology, nutrition, research methods and data analysis, developing the knowledge and practical laboratory and field skills that the discipline requires. Huddersfield's facilities support hands-on learning throughout, and the programme develops the scientific foundation for a range of professional roles in sport and health settings.

Graduates of sport and exercise science programmes pursue careers in sports performance analysis, strength and conditioning, sport science support roles in professional and amateur sport, health and fitness management, physical activity promotion, exercise referral, rehabilitation, teaching and research. Many graduates go on to further professional training, including postgraduate study in physiotherapy, sport and exercise medicine, sports coaching or strength and conditioning. The scientific and analytical skills developed also transfer into health policy, public health and related fields.

Postgraduate study in sport and exercise science, applied sport science or a related health science is a common progression for those drawn to specialist or research careers.

A great decision
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good transport links…
