About this course

Sport and exercise science applies the methods and knowledge of biology, physiology, biomechanics, and psychology to understand human movement and physical performance. It is the scientific foundation of elite sport support, exercise medicine, physical activity promotion, and the design of training programmes for athletes at every level. As evidence-based practice has become central to coaching, rehabilitation, and health promotion, the demand for sport scientists with rigorous training has grown substantially.

At the University of Bath, which has one of the most highly regarded sport and exercise science programmes in the UK and world-class facilities developed alongside elite sport, you will study exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology, nutrition, and research methods in depth. The programme is grounded in scientific rigour from the outset, and you will conduct laboratory-based investigations, collect and analyse data, and engage with current research literature as part of your regular academic work. Bath's close relationships with elite sport, including national governing bodies and the English Institute of Sport, create opportunities to engage with applied practice at a high level.

This is a three-year full-time programme. The combination of scientific training, practical laboratory competence, and the professional context Bath provides makes it one of the strongest environments in the country for this subject.

Graduates go on to careers in sport science support with elite and professional sport, strength and conditioning, sport rehabilitation, exercise referral and health promotion, coaching, and research. Many continue to postgraduate study, including applied sport science, sport medicine, or physiology. The Bath degree is widely recognised by employers in the sport and exercise sector.

Genuinely worthwhile
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. …

Highly recommend
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” the ci…
