Sport and Exercise Science

Sport and exercise science applies the principles of physiology, psychology, and biomechanics to understand how the human body performs, adapts, and recovers under the demands of physical activity. It is a discipline built on empirical research and scientific method, asking why some training approaches work better than others, how the mind influences physical output, and what movement mechanics reveal about both performance potential and injury risk. At Sheffield Hallam University, this programme is offered on a part-time basis with a foundation year and work placement opportunities, making it accessible to those with other commitments while still providing a thorough scientific and applied education in the discipline. You will develop your understanding of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and sport psychology alongside the research methods and analytical skills that allow you to engage critically with the scientific literature and design your own investigations. The programme also includes a sandwich element, with placement opportunities that give you professional experience in sport, exercise, or health settings alongside your studies.

Graduates pursue careers as sport scientists, strength and conditioning coaches, performance analysts, exercise physiologists, and personal trainers working with sports organisations, national governing bodies, universities, and health providers. Others move into exercise referral, rehabilitation, and public health roles, applying their knowledge of physical activity to community and clinical settings. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in sport science, physiotherapy, sports medicine, or strength and conditioning, developing specialist expertise for clinical or high-performance roles.
