About this course

Sport and exercise science applies the principles of physiology, psychology, and biomechanics to understanding human movement, physical performance, and health. It is a discipline that connects fundamental science to the practical realities of sport, exercise, and wellbeing, asking both how the body and mind respond to physical demands and how that knowledge can be applied to help people perform better, recover more effectively, and lead healthier lives. The field spans elite athletic performance, clinical exercise settings, public health, and the growing evidence base linking physical activity to mental and physical wellbeing.

At London South Bank University this three-year full-time programme gives you a strong scientific grounding in how the body and mind work, while developing the practical skills needed to support people across the full spectrum from recreational activity to competitive sport. You will study the physiology of exercise, including cardiovascular and metabolic responses to training, alongside the psychological dimensions of performance, motivation, and behaviour change. Biomechanics and movement analysis provide tools for understanding how human bodies move and how performance can be improved or injury prevented.

Learning takes place through a combination of laboratory sessions, practical experience, and real-world placements, giving you the hands-on competence that clinical and coaching roles require alongside your theoretical knowledge.

Graduates from sport and exercise science programmes work across a wide range of settings. Clinical exercise physiology, health and wellbeing roles in the NHS and community health, strength and conditioning coaching, performance analysis, sports development, and teaching are among the most common destinations. The scientific training the degree provides is also valued in research, public health, and the growing sector of corporate wellness and health promotion.

Many graduates go on to postgraduate study, including master's degrees in sport science, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, or public health, or pursue professional qualifications aligned to specific career pathways.
