Sport And Exercise Science

Sport and exercise science is the systematic study of the biological, physiological, psychological, and biomechanical factors that determine human physical performance and the health effects of exercise. It draws on anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition, psychology, and biomechanics to understand how the human body responds and adapts to training, how athletic performance can be optimised, and how exercise can be used to promote health across the lifespan. It is both a fundamental science and an applied discipline with direct relevance to elite sport and public health.

At Bangor University, this three-year full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year that provides a solid scientific and academic grounding before you advance to the full degree. You will study the physiological, psychological, biomechanical, and nutritional dimensions of sport and exercise, developing both laboratory and field skills alongside theoretical understanding. The programme includes a sandwich year with a year abroad and work placement, giving you direct professional experience in sport science support, fitness, health, or research settings, as well as international exposure to how the discipline is practised in different contexts.

Sport and exercise science graduates work with elite athletes and sports teams, in physiotherapy and rehabilitation, in health promotion and public health, in fitness and wellness, in sport development, and in research. The analytical and practical skills the degree develops are valued in a wide range of contexts where understanding of the human body and physical performance is relevant. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in exercise physiology, sport psychology, physiotherapy, or strength and conditioning.
