Sport and Exercise Psychology with Foundation Year

Sport and exercise psychology examines the psychological factors that influence participation in sport and physical activity, and the role that psychological skills and understanding can play in enhancing both performance and health. It asks how athletes prepare mentally for competition, why some people persist with exercise while others drop out, how coaches can motivate athletes more effectively, and how psychological principles can be applied to improve wellbeing through physical activity. It is a discipline that connects fundamental psychological science to practical questions in sport, coaching and public health.

At the University of Keele this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year for those who need additional preparation before the main degree. You will explore the application of psychology to sport coaching and performance as well as to exercise, health and wellbeing, developing your psychological research skills alongside your knowledge of the field. Topics include motivation, confidence, concentration, anxiety management, team dynamics, mental skills training, the psychology of injury and rehabilitation, and the role of physical activity in mental health.

The programme prepares you for careers across sports coaching, sports science and a range of related industries.

Sport and exercise psychology bridges academic research and professional practice, and the degree develops both the theoretical understanding and the practical skills that applied psychology in sport and exercise demands.

Graduates move into sports coaching, performance support roles, exercise and health promotion, sports science, talent development, rehabilitation and wellbeing roles. Many pursue postgraduate study in sport and exercise psychology, with some going on to register as practitioner psychologists through the Health and Care Professions Council. Others work in fitness, health promotion, corporate wellbeing and community sport programmes.
