Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and Language Therapy is the healthcare profession concerned with the assessment and treatment of communication disorders and difficulties with eating, drinking and swallowing. It is a discipline that draws on linguistics, anatomy, physiology, psychology and neuroscience to understand how speech and language develop and how they can be disrupted by a wide range of conditions, including developmental disorders, stroke, acquired brain injury, progressive neurological disease, voice disorders, and fluency difficulties such as stammering. Speech and language therapists work with people of all ages, from infants with feeding difficulties to older adults recovering from stroke, and the profession demands both clinical rigour and genuine interpersonal skill.

At Wrexham University, this three-year full-time degree prepares you for registration as a Speech and Language Therapist with the relevant professional bodies, combining academic study with extensive clinical placements in a range of settings. You will study linguistics and phonetics, anatomy and physiology of the speech and swallowing mechanism, neurology and psychology, clinical assessment methods, and the evidence base for different therapeutic approaches. The programme makes use of state-of-the-art healthcare and clinical simulation equipment, giving you hands-on preparation for clinical practice in a safe learning environment.

Qualified Speech and Language Therapists work in the NHS, education, social care, research, and independent practice. Settings include hospitals, community clinics, schools, care homes, prisons, and specialist centres for conditions such as autism, stroke rehabilitation, or head and neck cancer. Many therapists develop clinical specialisms as their careers advance, and opportunities also exist in clinical education, research, and service management.
