About this course

Spanish with Film Studies is a combination that takes two disciplines concerned with how culture and meaning are made and communicated, bringing the linguistic and cultural depth of Spanish studies together with the visual and narrative analysis that film scholarship demands. Spanish is one of the world's most widely spoken languages, the language of Spain and most of Latin America, and studying it opens access to literary and cultural traditions of extraordinary richness as well as practical communication across a large part of the world. Film studies examines cinema as an art form, a cultural force, and an industry, asking how films are made, how they create meaning, and what they reflect about the societies that produce and consume them.

At University College London, this four-year full-time programme is a joint honours degree split equally between the two subjects. The Spanish element is taught in the School of European Languages, Culture and Society, and you will develop skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation alongside cultural modules covering literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics. The film studies element develops your critical and analytical understanding of cinema across historical periods, national traditions, and theoretical frameworks.

Your third year is a year abroad spent in a country where Spanish is spoken, immersing you in the language and culture in a way that no amount of classroom study can replicate.

Graduates of this combination go on to careers in journalism, translation and interpreting, cultural diplomacy, media production, broadcasting, education, publishing, international organisations, and the creative industries. The Spanish-speaking world offers an enormous range of professional contexts for those with genuine language skills and cultural knowledge, and the film studies element adds analytical sophistication and awareness of visual culture that is valued in many media and communications roles. Postgraduate study in Hispanic studies, film studies, translation, or media is a well-established route for those who wish to develop their expertise further.

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” go…

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” the city i…
