Spanish and theological studies brings together a major world language with one of the oldest and most profound areas of human inquiry. Spanish is spoken by around 500 million people across Spain, Latin America and growing communities worldwide, and mastering it opens access to an extraordinarily rich literary, cultural and historical tradition spanning from the medieval to the contemporary. Theological studies, in a broad and comparative sense, examines the nature and claims of religious traditions, the philosophical questions they raise, and the role that faith, ritual and doctrine have played in shaping human societies and individual lives.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, which is central to the language component and will give you sustained immersion in a Spanish-speaking country, deepening your linguistic fluency and cultural understanding. You will develop your Spanish language skills to a high level, choosing from a broad range of courses exploring the literature, history, film and culture of Spain and Latin America from the Golden Age to the present day. The theological studies component will engage you with questions of truth, revelation, religious ethics, the comparative study of world religions and the philosophical dimensions of belief.
