Spanish and Linguistics

Spanish and linguistics is a combination that invites you to engage with one of the world's major languages both as a living cultural and social phenomenon and as an object of scientific study. Spanish is spoken by over 500 million people across the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, and communities around the world, making it one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and one of growing commercial and cultural importance. Linguistics is the scientific study of language itself, examining how languages are structured, how they are acquired and used, how they vary across communities and change over time, and what they tell us about human cognition and social life.

At the University of Westminster this three-year programme develops your Spanish language proficiency through sustained study of the language alongside engagement with Spanish and Latin American literature, culture, history, and society. In linguistics, you will explore phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, developing systematic frameworks for understanding how language works as a human system. The two components enrich each other: the linguistic training deepens your analytical understanding of Spanish, while the cultural and social dimension of Spanish study illuminates the sociolinguistic questions that linguistics raises.

The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience and extended time in a Spanish-speaking country.

Graduates from Spanish and linguistics programmes work in translation and interpreting, language teaching, publishing, journalism, broadcasting, speech and language therapy, international business, the civil service, and academic research. Spanish proficiency is a significant professional asset across Latin American markets, European institutions, and international organisations, and the analytical skills that linguistics develops transfer broadly across fields that require careful thinking about language and communication.
