Spanish and History of Art

Spanish and history of art is a four-year joint honours combination at UCL that gives equal weight to both disciplines, developing genuine linguistic competence in Spanish alongside serious engagement with the history and theory of visual art across periods, cultures, and traditions. The language component is taught in the School of European Languages, Culture and Society, where you will take modules not only in language, covering speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation, but also in cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, politics, and other relevant fields designed to complement your language learning. History of art develops your ability to analyse and interpret visual works and material culture, situating them in their historical, social, and cultural contexts.

At University College London, this four-year full-time programme builds over a year abroad spent in a Spanish-speaking country, which is built into the structure of the degree. The year abroad transforms your linguistic competence from a high level of proficiency to genuine fluency, while also giving you the cultural immersion that deepens your art historical understanding of Spanish-speaking traditions and contexts. You will be able to tailor your degree to your areas of interest through a wide variety of modules, developing depth in the areas of art history and Spanish culture that matter most to you.
