Spanish and Beginners' Modern Greek

Spanish and Modern Greek is a combination that brings together two languages of enormous cultural significance and quite different characters. Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages on Earth, the official tongue of more than twenty countries, and the carrier of a literary tradition stretching from the medieval epic of El Cid through the Golden Age drama of Cervantes and Calderon to the magical realism of Garcia Marquez and the contemporary fiction of writers across Spain and Latin America. Modern Greek connects you to a living language that stands at the end of one of the world's longest continuous literary traditions, from ancient Homer and the tragedians through Byzantium to the moderns, as well as to a contemporary culture of considerable vitality.

At the University of Oxford, this four-year full-time programme takes students who are beginning Modern Greek from scratch, making it suitable for those who already have or are developing strong Spanish but are new to Greek. Oxford's tutorial system provides intensive one-to-one engagement with expert academics in both languages, and the depth of scholarly attention available in both the Spanish and Modern Greek teaching at Oxford is exceptional. You will develop advanced Spanish proficiency, working with literature, film, and cultural texts from across the Spanish-speaking world, while building your Modern Greek from beginners' level to a standard sufficient for genuine engagement with literary and cultural material.

Spending time in Spanish-speaking countries and in Greece is strongly encouraged for students in modern languages at Oxford, and the four-year structure provides the time to develop both languages to a high standard.

Graduates move into translation and interpreting, diplomacy and international relations, business, journalism, academia, publishing, education, and a wide range of other careers where language skills and cultural knowledge are valued.
