Sound Engineering with Foundation Year

Sound engineering is the technical discipline concerned with capturing, processing, mixing, and reproducing audio, spanning applications from live concert reinforcement and studio recording through to acoustics, broadcast, and the development of audio hardware and software. It is a field where scientific rigour and creative sensibility must work together: a sound engineer needs to understand the physics of sound and the electronics of signal chains, and also to make aesthetic judgments about what good audio sounds and feels like. The field is evolving rapidly, with digital audio workstations, spatial audio formats, and machine learning applications transforming professional practice.

At Birmingham City University, this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year that builds the technical and academic foundations needed to enter the full degree with confidence. From there you will develop expertise across the major areas of sound engineering, including studio recording and production, live sound reinforcement, acoustics and room design, audio electronics, and the development of audio software and hardware. You will develop skills in signal processing, mixing, acoustic measurement, and audio programming, alongside the creative judgment and communication skills that professional audio roles demand.
