Sound and Music Production
Sound and music production is the discipline concerned with how recorded and electronic sound is created, shaped, mixed, and released. It encompasses music production from composition and arrangement through recording and editing to mixing and mastering, as well as the broader world of sound design for film, television, games, and interactive media. It is a field that rewards both creative vision and technical rigour, requiring you to develop your ears and your aesthetic judgement alongside your command of the tools and processes of the recording studio and digital audio workstation.
At the University of Gloucestershire, this three-year full-time programme situates sound and music production at the core of the creative industries, recognising the depth and diversity of career opportunities available in a sector that spans commercial music, film and TV sound, games audio, live performance, and more. You will study music theory, recording technology, synthesis, sound design, music business, and the creative and technical processes that take a piece of music or an audio project from conception to delivery. Practical studio work is central to the programme, developing your ability to work professionally with the tools and workflows that the industry uses.
You will build a portfolio of work across different genres and formats, demonstrating both creative range and technical competence, which is the essential foundation for entering the music and sound industries.
Graduates move into careers as music producers, sound engineers, audio post-production specialists, sound designers for film and games, mixing and mastering engineers, music supervisors, and in A&R, artist management, and music publishing.
