About this course

Modern society depends on large-scale software systems in ways that are easy to underestimate. The services that manage energy grids, coordinate healthcare, enable communications, run financial markets, and control transport networks are all built and maintained by software engineers. Software engineering is the discipline that addresses the challenge of building these systems reliably, at scale, and within real-world constraints of cost, time, and changing requirements.

It brings together computer science theory with systematic methods for design, development, testing, and maintenance, recognising that writing code is only part of what it takes to deliver software that genuinely works.

At Liverpool Hope University, this five-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and a foundation year in industry, giving you an unusually rich combination of international academic experience and sustained professional learning alongside your core studies. You will develop a thorough understanding of software development methodologies, programming paradigms, system architecture, and quality assurance. The curriculum builds your ability to reason about complex systems, manage the full software development lifecycle, and work effectively within teams using professional tools and practices.

The year abroad broadens your perspective and develops your capacity to work across different contexts and cultures.

Software engineering graduates enter one of the most consistently strong areas of the graduate job market. Roles include software developer, systems architect, quality assurance engineer, technical project manager, and DevOps engineer, across sectors ranging from fintech and healthcare technology to gaming, defence, and public services. The analytical and problem-solving skills the degree develops are also valued in technical consulting, product management, and entrepreneurship.

Postgraduate study, including research degrees in areas such as artificial intelligence, distributed systems, cybersecurity, or formal methods, is open to those who wish to specialise further or pursue an academic career.
