About this course

Software engineering is the discipline concerned with the systematic design, development, and maintenance of large-scale software systems that are reliable, efficient, and fit for purpose. As the current description of this programme notes, modern society depends on such systems to support essential services across energy, communications, health, business, and transport, and as these systems grow more complex, the challenge of delivering robust and cost-effective solutions intensifies. Software engineering addresses this challenge through rigorous methods: requirements analysis, system design, implementation, testing, quality assurance, and the project management approaches needed to coordinate complex development work.

At Liverpool Hope University, this five-year full-time BEng programme includes both a foundation year and a year in industry, as well as a year abroad. The foundation year provides a supported route into engineering for students who are building the mathematical and scientific foundations needed for degree-level study, or whose entry circumstances have not allowed them to demonstrate their full potential at the point of application. The year in industry gives you extended experience in a software development or technology organisation, working on real systems under professional supervision.

The year abroad provides international study experience at a partner institution, broadening your perspective on how software is developed and deployed in different contexts.

Across the programme, you will develop expertise in programming, algorithms and data structures, systems design, software architecture, testing and quality assurance, database systems, and the project management and professional practices central to software engineering. The emphasis on reliability and robustness reflects the engineering discipline's concern with building systems that work correctly in the real world, not just in controlled conditions.

Graduates from software engineering programmes are in strong and sustained demand across virtually every sector of the economy. Software development, systems architecture, technical consultancy, project management in technology organisations, and roles in cybersecurity, data engineering, and quality assurance are all typical career directions. Many graduates pursue incorporated or chartered engineer status.
