Sociology and German is a combination that pairs the scientific analysis of society with one of Europe's most significant languages and cultural traditions. Sociology examines how social structures, institutions, and cultural forces shape individual lives and collective outcomes, and it is a discipline with a particularly strong intellectual tradition in Germany, where thinkers such as Marx, Weber, and Simmel laid the foundations of the modern discipline. German itself opens access to that intellectual heritage as well as to a living culture of extraordinary richness and contemporary global significance.

At the University of Glasgow this five-year, full-time programme develops your sociological understanding alongside your German language skills and cultural knowledge. You will study social theory, research methods, and a range of substantive topics in contemporary sociology, from inequality and social class to race, gender, urban life, and digital society. In the German component you will study the language across a wide spectrum of teaching, from the eighteenth century to contemporary culture, developing both linguistic proficiency and critical engagement with the literature, film, history, and politics of the German-speaking world.

A sandwich year and work placement opportunities are built in, giving you professional experience in relevant settings.

Graduates of this combination are well placed for careers in research, policy, education, the civil service, journalism, international organisations, and the many sectors where both sociological thinking and German-language skills are valued. The combination is particularly well suited to careers in German-speaking countries or in organisations with significant German connections, as well as to academic research in sociology, German studies, or the intersection of the two. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in sociology, German, European studies, or related fields.
