Sociology WITH Psychology

Sociology and psychology address the same fundamental territory from different directions. Sociology asks how the social structures, institutions, norms and inequalities that surround us shape who we are and how we behave. Psychology asks how the mind works from the inside, examining perception, memory, emotion, motivation and the processes that drive individual behaviour.

Combining the two disciplines gives you a more complete account of human life than either can provide alone, and it trains you to move fluidly between the external forces that shape society and the internal forces that shape individuals.

At City St George's, University of London you will study both disciplines in an integrated three-year programme that develops your skills in research, data analysis and critical thinking. You will engage with sociological theory from Marx and Durkheim to contemporary debates about identity, inequality and globalisation, while also exploring the core areas of psychological science, including cognitive, developmental, social and biological psychology. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, as well as a work placement, meaning you will spend significant time outside the classroom in professional and international contexts, deepening your experience and strengthening your graduate profile.

The combination of sociology and psychology equips you for careers across a wide range of public, private and voluntary sector settings. Graduates work in market research, social policy, human resources and organisational development, social care, mental health support, community development, education, journalism, the civil service, and a growing range of roles in the tech and data industries.
