Sociology asks some of the most searching questions about the world we inhabit together. What holds communities and institutions together, and what causes them to fracture? How do inequalities form, persist, and change?

Why do people behave so differently depending on the social contexts they find themselves in? At the University of Essex, this three-year full-time degree gives you a thorough grounding in the discipline, drawing on a department with a strong international research reputation.

You will explore the major traditions in sociological theory, from the founding figures of the nineteenth century to contemporary debates about globalisation, identity, and digital society. Research methods receive serious attention throughout, and you will become confident in both quantitative approaches such as survey analysis and qualitative methods such as ethnography and interview-based research. Contemporary case studies ground the theory in real social phenomena, whether that means examining health inequalities, the dynamics of race and ethnicity, criminal justice, the sociology of education, or the organisation of work and labour markets.
