Sociology

Sociology is the scientific study of human society, examining how social structures, institutions, cultures, and inequalities shape the lives of individuals and groups. It asks why society is organised the way it is, who benefits and who is disadvantaged, and how social change happens. It is a discipline that combines theoretical ambition with empirical rigour, taking seriously both the big questions about how societies work and the careful methods needed to investigate them.

At the University of East Anglia you will engage with the major traditions of sociological thought, including classical theorists such as Marx, Weber, and Durkheim, alongside contemporary debates about globalisation, identity, inequality, power, and social change. You will study substantive topics that reflect current social realities, including race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, class and poverty, crime, health inequalities, media and culture, and the sociology of work and organisations. Research methods are central to the programme, covering both quantitative approaches such as survey analysis and statistical methods and qualitative approaches such as interviewing, observation, and discourse analysis.

UEA's social sciences are strong in research and in their engagement with real social questions, and the university's campus environment encourages intellectual debate and independent thinking.

Sociology graduates are employed across a wide range of fields, including social work and social policy, public health, criminal justice, human resources, market research, journalism, education, government, and the voluntary sector. The combination of analytical skills, research competence, and social awareness is valuable in any professional context that involves understanding people and organisations. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, social work, or related disciplines.
