Sociology

Sociology is the systematic scientific study of human society, examining how social structures, institutions, cultures, and processes shape human behaviour and life chances. It asks why poverty and inequality persist, how norms and identities are formed and enforced, how institutions such as schools, the media, and the criminal justice system function, and how social change happens. It is a discipline that refuses to take the social world for granted, insisting instead on asking critical questions about the arrangements we often take as natural or inevitable and exploring how they might be different.

At Manchester Metropolitan University this three-year full-time programme is aimed at students who are curious about how socialisation has shaped human beings and who want to understand and address pressing social problems, from poverty and inequality to crime and political corruption. You will engage with sociological theory, research methods, and contemporary social issues, developing both conceptual understanding and practical research skills. A sandwich year and a work placement are incorporated into the programme, giving you professional experience alongside your academic development and ensuring you can connect the ideas you study to real social contexts and organisations.

Sociology graduates are found across an exceptionally wide range of careers. The civil service, social work, education, policy research, journalism, NGOs, community development, human resources, and the voluntary sector are all common destinations. The analytical rigour, evidence-based thinking, and understanding of social systems that the degree develops are valued in any organisation that needs to understand people and communities.

Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, or related fields, pursuing specialist expertise or research careers in areas where sociological analysis is directly applicable.
