Sociology

Sociology is the systematic study of human societies and the social structures, institutions, and processes that shape how people live, think, and interact. It examines class, race, gender, inequality, power, and culture, asking how the social world is organised and with what effects for different groups of people. It is a discipline that takes nothing for granted, subjecting the most familiar aspects of everyday life, from family and education to media and politics, to rigorous critical scrutiny.

At Loughborough University, the BSc in Sociology is a three-year full-time programme taught within a department that combines strong theoretical training with a commitment to empirical research and real-world engagement. You will study core sociological theory, research methods, and substantive areas such as inequality, globalisation, crime, health, and social policy. Loughborough has a strong research culture, and you will engage with current sociological debates rather than simply learning established frameworks.

The programme develops your capacity to think sociologically about contemporary issues and to carry out your own research using both qualitative and quantitative methods.

You will develop skills in critical analysis, research design, data interpretation, and academic writing that are among the most transferable produced by a university education.

Sociology graduates go on to careers in social research, public policy, community development, social work, journalism, education, the voluntary sector, the civil service, and management. The degree is also a strong platform for postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, social work, or related fields.
