Sociology and Spanish

Sociology and Spanish is a combination that opens two very different but mutually enriching perspectives on human society and culture. Sociology is the systematic study of social structures, institutions and the forces that shape human experience, examining inequality, power, culture and change through rigorous empirical and theoretical analysis. Spanish gives you access to one of the world's most widely spoken and culturally rich languages, used across the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America and growing communities globally, and brings with it a deep engagement with Hispanic literatures, histories, cultures and contemporary social realities.

At the University of Stirling, this four-year full-time degree develops your sociological knowledge and analytical skills alongside your Spanish language proficiency and your understanding of Hispanic cultures. You will study social theory, research methods, inequality, identity, culture, globalisation and a range of substantive sociological topics alongside Spanish language work from your current level toward advanced proficiency, and engagement with Spanish and Latin American literature, history, film and culture. A year abroad is built into the programme, which is essential for serious language study and gives you the extended immersive experience in a Spanish-speaking environment that classroom learning alone cannot replicate.

You will develop strong analytical and research skills from your sociology training alongside the linguistic and cross-cultural capabilities that language study develops. The combination is particularly valuable for those interested in international dimensions of social research, development work, or careers that span English and Spanish-speaking worlds.

Graduates move into social research, policy, teaching, journalism, international development, NGOs, the public sector, translation and interpreting, and a wide range of roles that value both analytical social science training and Spanish language competence. Postgraduate study in sociology, languages, international development or social research is a well-supported pathway.
