Sociology and Spanish & Latin American Studies

Sociology and Spanish and Latin American studies is a combination that pairs the scientific study of how societies work with the linguistic, literary, and cultural engagement that Spanish and the Spanish-speaking world demand. Sociology asks how inequalities are produced, how institutions shape behaviour, how identities are formed, and how social change happens, using both quantitative and qualitative methods to build evidence-based understanding of the social world. Spanish and Latin American studies opens access to the extraordinary diversity of a language spoken by more than half a billion people across Europe, the Americas, and beyond, alongside the literary, historical, and cultural traditions that have emerged from that world.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme allows you to explore both how societies work, using the tools of sociological analysis, and how people in very different social and cultural contexts have expressed their experiences in language, literature, and culture. Your sociology studies will develop your analytical and research skills, engaging with theory and methods in a department with a strong track record in producing graduates who are sought after by employers across many sectors. Your Spanish studies will develop your language proficiency toward an advanced level, alongside deep engagement with the cultural, historical, and literary traditions of Spain and Latin America.

A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the invaluable opportunity to spend time in a Spanish-speaking country and to encounter the social and cultural realities you have been studying from within.

You will develop strong analytical, research, and communication skills, alongside the intercultural intelligence and linguistic proficiency that Spanish brings.

Graduates go on to careers in social research, international development, journalism, education, cultural organisations, NGOs, policy, and business in Spanish-speaking markets. Postgraduate study in sociology, Spanish, or Latin American studies is a natural continuation.
