Sociology and Philosophy

Sociology and philosophy are disciplines that have been in dialogue since the beginnings of both as organised fields of inquiry, and for good reason. Sociology is the scientific study of social life: it examines how societies are structured, how inequalities are produced and sustained, how culture shapes behaviour, and how collective human life is organised through institutions, norms, and webs of social relationship. Philosophy asks the foundational questions about what we know and how we know it, what makes actions right or wrong, and what it means to exist as a person in a world of other persons.

Together they develop one of the most complete intellectual frameworks available for examining how human life is organised and how it ought to be.

At Bristol this three-year full-time programme, which includes a foundation year as its first stage, places particular emphasis in its sociology component on sociological theory and its application to real-world concerns, including consumption, the environment, modern slavery, risk, and food. Sociology also develops your research skills in both quantitative and qualitative traditions. The philosophy element provides a thorough grounding in the discipline, including logic and critical thinking, epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and political philosophy, developing the analytical precision and argumentative rigour that are the hallmarks of philosophical training.

The foundation year provides the academic preparation needed before beginning the main degree, building confidence and foundational knowledge in both subject areas.

Graduates of sociology and philosophy programmes move into careers in research, the civil service, journalism, education, social work, the voluntary sector, policy, law, and a wide range of other fields where analytical thinking, research skills, and the ability to engage with complex social questions are valued. Many continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, sociology, or related applied fields.
